The Parkland Lakes
First time visitors to the Parkland often have myriad questions when approaching such strange new waters--and justifiably so. After all, those who drive into the area are puzzled how such fabulous fishing could exist after passing unbroken miles of wheat and canola swaying in the prairie wind and sun. They needn't feel alone. We used to wonder the same until we discovered the massive amounts of forage in such fertile waters. The lakes are scattered and have wildly different characteristics. It's impossible to say what will work when and if, but we can resolve at least part of the mysteries. On these Parkland Lake pages we'll show you how to get there and some hydrographic maps that viewers can use to plan a starting point. The FLIPPR Lakes (Adobe PDF Reader required, free at www.adobe.com) The FLIPPR lakes are regulated to maintain a population of large fish, since all fish over 45 cm (18 inches) must be released. They are frequented by those wanting to hook a truly large fish for some photos and yet retain one for the frying pan. The regulations state that artificial lures only can be used to prevent deep swallowing of bait and subsequent mortality. The use of gasoline powered motors are banned on so-called "FLIPPR waters", but there's no need to dismount them when fishing. Just leave them tipped up and use your electric motor. Natural baits are prohibited, including worms and preserved/frozen minnows. Long experience has proven that deeply swallowed baits add to mortality and impair C&R fishing. Spinners, flies, and spoons work just fine in all of these waters, whether cast or trolled, so no one is left out of the fun.

Other Great Waters FLIPPR is not the only organization to have been busy in the parkland. While taking a slightly different, broader approach, the provincial fisheries' people, municipal entities and fish\game clubs have been busy for decades producing and maintaining excellent fisheries with regulations more amenable to those who wish to keep a fish or two for the frying pan. Click any one of these for links for information, a rudimentary hydrographic map and some notes to get our visitors started. Duck Mountain Lakes Perch Lake (C&R Only) Western Lakes
